Chrysomela scripta, Plagiodera versicolora (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), and Trichoplusia ni (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Track Specific Leaf Developmental Stages

چکیده
It is well recognized that host-specialized folivores prefer to feed on young in comparison to old leaves. However, the capacity of young leaf feeders to track speciÞc leaf developmental stages has not been clearly demonstrated. Using three insect folivores and two plant species, we show that nitrogen (N) fertilization changes leaf development and that herbivores track these changes in leaf development.Nicotiana tabacumL. and Populus deltoidesBartramwere fertilized at two and three rates ofN addition, respectively. Plantswith high rates ofN supply had faster growth, greater leaf area, and faster leaf initiation rates thanplants receiving lowratesofNsupply. Most important, allNaddition treatments changed the position on the stem where leaves reached 95% full expansion; with leaves on plants receiving high rates of N addition reaching 95% full expansion further from the stem apex (e.g., leaf position 5 versus leaf position 3). Feeding assays with Trichoplusia niHubner onN. tabacum, and Plagiodera versicolora Laicharting and Chrysomela scripta F. on P. deltoides showed that these insect species preferred to feed on leaves at a speciÞc degree of leaf expansion. This preference was exhibited independent of leaf position and N addition rate.

Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the efficacy of two Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner formulations, Novodor and Raven, for controlling cottonwood leaf beetle, Chrysomela scripta F. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). In laboratory bioassays, larvae or adults were added to petri dishes containing Populus x euramericana Guinier 'Eugenei' foliage that had been treated with dist...
متن کاملEffects of Rag1 on the preference and performance of soybean defoliators.
The Rag1 gene confers antibiotic resistance to soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and in 2010, varieties expressing Rag1 were released for commercial use in the United States. We do not know how Rag1 varieties will influence the broader community of defoliating insects that inhabit soybean fields. In 2010 and 2011, the preference and performance of pest insects that...
متن کاملSalix transect of Europe: patterns in the most abundant chrysomelid beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) herbivores of willow from Greece to Arctic Norway
BACKGROUND Chrysomelid beetles associated with willow (Salix spp.) were surveyed at 41 sites across Europe, from Greece (lat. 38.8 °N) to arctic Norway (lat. 69.7 °N). NEW INFORMATION In all, 34 willow-associated chrysomelid species were encountered, of which eight were very abundant. The abundant species were: Crepidodera aurata Marsham, 1802 at 27 sites, Phratora vitellinae (Linnaeus, 1758)...
